Il limo è stato portato durante l'ultima era glaciale con il ghiaccio dei ghiacciai. Questi avvallamenti si sono formati perché il limo è stato scavato per indurire le strade e nei cortili. Sui resti di limo dentro e attorno agli avvallamenti cresce una flora caratteristica che è particolare per i Paesi Bassi. Queste piante sono molto vulnerabili a disturbi e calpestio. Per proteggere queste piante da calpestio ed erosione degli avvallamenti, sono state recintate. Dopo che le piante hanno fiorito e prodotto semi, gli avvallamenti vengono comunque pascolati per evitare o ridurre l'invasione delle more.
