Nel periodo della crisi petrolifera del 1973, Henk Lagerweij sperimentò con la sua prima turbina eolica autocostruita con una potenza di 2,2 kW. Il palo per questa turbina era un vecchio ceppo d'albero. Ciò portò nel 1979, insieme a suo cognato Gijs van de Loenhorst, alla fondazione dell'azienda 'Lagerwey van der Loenhorst'. Il primo prodotto è una turbina da 10 kW. A causa della (seconda) crisi petrolifera ci fu un interesse relativamente alto e Lagerweij poté sviluppare turbine sempre più grandi. Quando il prezzo del petrolio scese nuovamente, tuttavia, la domanda non seguì, portando l'azienda a dichiarare bancarotta per la prima volta nel 1985.
