La chiesa fece parte della basilica di Maria e Lebuino, costruita alla fine del XIII secolo. Contrariamente alla chiesa capitolare di San Lebuino, era destinata alla borghesia come chiesa parrocchiale. All'inizio del XVI secolo, la chiesa parrocchiale si separò dalla chiesa capitolare e fu costruita la nuova chiesa di Maria accanto alla Grande Chiesa dedicata a Lebuino. Le navate laterali di entrambe le chiese si trovavano più o meno in continuità. Per lungo tempo ci fu un passaggio tra entrambe le chiese. Dalla parte del Grande Cortile della Chiesa furono costruite le cosiddette case delle Vergini per ospitare donne single.
