Die Kirche war ab Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts Teil der damals erbauten Maria- und Lebuïnusbasilika. Im Gegensatz zur Kapitelkirche von Sint Lebuïnus war sie als Pfarrkirche für das Bürgertum bestimmt. Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts trennte sich die Pfarrkirche von der Kapitelkirche, und die neue Mariakirche wurde neben der Großen Kirche, die Lebuïnus geweiht war, erbaut. Die Seitenschiffe beider Kirchen lagen mehr oder weniger in einer Linie zueinander. Lange Zeit gab es einen Durchgang zwischen beiden Kirchen. Auf der Seite des Großen Kirchhofs wurden die sogenannten Jungfrauenhäuser gebaut, um alleinstehende Frauen unterzubringen.
