Il Stedelijk Gymnasium di Leida è una delle scuole più antiche dei Paesi Bassi. La storia della scuola risale al medioevo. Oggi è anche il più grande ginnasio indipendente dei Paesi Bassi con più di 1.800 studenti.
La scuola è menzionata per la prima volta nel 1323 con il nome di schole o scoele, in un documento del conte Guglielmo III. Si sospetta che la scuola sia stata fondata nella seconda metà del XIII secolo. Dopo l'assedio di Leida nel 1574, Nicolaus Stochius, un calvinista, fu nominato rettore dal sindaco Pieter Adriaansz. van der Werff di Leida, sebbene la direzione della scuola fosse luterana.
