Il villaggio gemello di Middelharnis/Sommelsdijk ha un aspetto di villaggio protetto. Anche Middelharnis ha un bel cerchio di chiese con al centro la monumentale chiesa gotica di Kruiskerk.
La chiesa di Middelharnis è visibile nel suo stato originale nel dipinto "Het laantje van Middelharnis" di Meindert Hobbema. Meindert Lubbertszoon Hobbema (1638-1709) era un pittore olandese di paesaggi, nato ad Amsterdam. Il suo lavoro più conosciuto è "Het Laantje van Middelharnis" (1689), che oggi si trova nella National Gallery di Londra.
Nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo, ebrei si stabilirono in vari villaggi a Goeree e Overflakkee. Anche a Middelharnis sorse una fiorente comunità ebraica e nel 1842 fu costruita una sinagoga.
A partire da agosto 1942, gli ebrei di Flakkee furono deportati nei campi di sterminio. La più grande deportazione avvenne all'inizio di novembre dello stesso anno. Ad eccezione di un pugno di clandestini, tutti gli abitanti ebrei furono deportati e uccisi.
