Prima del 1355, Weesp aveva già una fortificazione in terra e legno. La città si trovava infatti in una posizione strategica al confine tra il territorio dei conti di Olanda e quello del vescovo di Utrecht. Dopo l'assedio francese del 1672, la difesa di Weesp fu notevolmente ampliata con quattro bastioni, di cui due sulla Ossenmarkt. La fortezza con il Torenfort sulla Ossenmarkt e le fortificazioni circostanti facevano parte della Hollandse Waterlinie e, in seguito, anche della Stelling van Amsterdam. L'industria è sempre stata importante per Weesp: le birrerie, le distillerie di jenever e la produzione di cacao hanno giocato un ruolo nella economia locale per secoli.
