Før 1355 havde Weesp allerede en vold af ler og træ. Byen lå nemlig strategisk ved grænsen mellem greverne af Holland og biskoppen af Utrecht. Efter den franske belejring i 1672 blev forsvaret af Weesp betydeligt udvidet med fire bastioner, hvoraf to lå på Ossenmarkt. Fæstningen med Torenfortet ved Ossenmarkt og de omkringliggende fæstninger var en del af den hollandske vandlinje og senere også af Stellingen af Amsterdam.
Industrien har altid været vigtig for Weesp: bryggerier, jeneverdestillerier og kakaoproduktion spillede i århundreder en rolle i den lokale økonomi.
