Questo luogo, un incrocio di corsi d'acqua torbosi, in passato costituiva il confine tra Holland e Utrecht, regioni che avevano costantemente litigi tra loro. Qui si trova ancora il confine tra Utrecht e Noord-Holland. Ora ti trovi a Utrecht e alla tua sinistra (verso ovest) c'è Noord-Holland.
Il borgo prende il nome dal ponte, ma ci sono molte incertezze riguardo al nome del ponte. In passato veniva chiamato anche Stoppelaersbrug o Stockelaerbrug, su una cartolina del 1910 si legge Stappelaarsbrug.
Probabilmente Stoppelaar o Stokkelaar è un riferimento a una persona.
Vicino al ponte c'è un piccolo fast food con lo stesso nome che è aperto in estate.
