La Terra Affondata di Saeftinghe rappresenta la più grande zona di marsh salmastre d'Europa. L'area è grande 3580 ettari ed è composta da una delta di fanghi e scogliere con numerosi canali. La differenza tra alta e bassa marea è di circa 4,80 metri nel punto della terra affondata, ma durante le maree di flusso può arrivare a superare i sette metri. La Terra Affondata è un'area importante per gli uccelli, dove molte specie di uccelli nidificanti e migratori vivono o transitano.
