The Drowned Land of Saeftinghe is the largest brackish water salt marsh in Europe. The area is 3580 hectares in size and consists of a delta of mudflats and salt marshes with many gullies. The difference between high and low tide is an average of 4.80 metres at the level of the drowned land, but at spring tide it can rise to more than seven metres. The Drowned Land is an important area for birds where many breeding and migratory birds live or pass through.
