Nel XVI secolo, i Paesi Bassi (grosso modo l'attuale Belgio e Paesi Bassi insieme) sono al culmine del loro potere. Si oppongono al dominio del re spagnolo Filippo II. Sotto le spoglie di conflitti religiosi, scoppia una guerra che durerà ottant'anni. La lotta si svolge soprattutto nel nord delle Fiandre. Gli spagnoli combattono contro i ribelli, i cosiddetti 'Stati'. Vengono costruite fortezze, allagati i polder, eretti argini, scavati fossati e canali. Queste sono le cosiddette linee. La guerra rimodella il paesaggio. Alla fine determina anche il confine tra i Paesi Bassi settentrionali, gli Stati (l'attuale Paesi Bassi) e i Paesi Bassi meridionali, gli spagnoli (oggi Belgio).
