Il Bargerveen è una vasta riserva di torbiere (2.028 ha) a sud-est di Emmen. È l'ultimo residuo del Bourtangerveen, che è quasi interamente bonificato.
La Commissione Forestale cerca di trattenere il maggior quantitativo di acqua possibile nel Bargerveen attraverso misure di sviluppo (inclusa la costruzione di dighe). Le torbiere sollevate dipendono dall'acqua piovana. Se il deflusso viene accelerato, la torba si asciuga e le comunità speciali scompaiono. Trattenendo l'acqua, la formazione della torba può continuare senza ostacoli e le parti più preziose vengono preservate. La gestione aggiuntiva consiste nel pascolare con un gregge di pecore, seminare, falciare e rimuovere stoccaggi.
Il Bargerveen è stato designato come monumento geologico, è un'area con valori geologici (geologici, geomorfologici, del suolo) speciali.
