La storia antica di Drakensteyn è strettamente legata a quella della città cavalleresca di Drakenburg presso Baarn, che fu demolita nel diciannovesimo secolo. Nel 1360 si scrisse per la prima volta di una fattoria Drakesteyn che nel 1385 fu concessa in feudo a Federico di Drakenburg.
Nel 1634 Ernst van Reede divenne il proprietario della fattoria Drakensteyn. Suo figlio Gerard fece costruire nel 1640 una nuova casa ottagonale completamente simmetrica, probabilmente su progetto di Jacob van Campen. La casa fu riconosciuta come città cavalleresca e Gerard divenne cavaliere. In quei giorni fu anche costruito il villaggio di Lage Vuursche. Il cavaliere Gerard fece costruire una chiesa con una parrocchia, una scuola, un mulino e una locanda.
