Van Dijk è stato sindaco di Barneveld dal 8 dicembre 2011. Il 12 giugno 2020 ha annunciato la sua partenza come sindaco di Barneveld. È partito il 1 febbraio 2021 e da quella data è stato succeduto da Jan Luteijn come sindaco ad interim.
