L'ex comune apparteneva alla provincia di Coimbra. Il comune aveva una superficie totale di 5,6 km² e 5678 abitanti.
In seguito alla riorganizzazione amministrativa in Portogallo del 29 settembre 2013, Santa Cruz è stata unita ai comuni di Sé Nova, Almedina e São Bartolomeu per formare il nuovo comune União das Freguesias de Coimbra. La sede principale del nuovo comune è diventata Sé Nova. Il nuovo comune comprende essenzialmente il nucleo storico di Coimbra.
