La chiesa si trova nel centro storico della città e fu costruita nel XVIII secolo grazie alle elemosine di devozione di D. Tristão de Menezes e del parroco della città.
La chiesa fu costruita su un terreno donato dal sindaco Tomaz de Lima, a condizione che il suo stemma fosse posto sulla facciata .
La facciata anteriore è rettangolare con una sola navata e coro ed è delimitata da cunei a forma di lesena. Sulla destra, attaccato alla facciata, si trova il campanile con un orologio. La porta è coronata da una grande finestra con illuminazione interna e quest'ultima dallo stemma della famiglia Tomaz de Lima.
Il Santuario da Senhora da Lapa fu costruito nella seconda metà del XVII secolo sulle rocce dove, secondo la tradizione, sarebbe apparsa la Vergine Maria.
