Il fiume sfocia nel Kattegat a Göteborg dopo un percorso di 93 km. Tenendo conto il Vänern e il suo principale affluente, il Klarälven, il sistema fluviale presenta una lunghezza di circa 720 km.
A Kungälv prima di raggiungere il mare, il fiume si divide in due: il braccio nord diventa il Nordre älv, mentre il braccio meridionale mantiene il nome di Göta älv.
