La Biblioteca Universitaria di Umeå è una delle sette biblioteche in Svezia che per legge riceve direttamente dai tipografi in Svezia una copia di ogni libro stampato.
La Biblioteca Universitaria ha origine dalla Biblioteca Scientifica di Umeå, istituita nel 1950 presso la Biblioteca Comunale di Umeå. Nel 1951 la biblioteca è stata riconosciuta come importante per la Svezia settentrionale. La biblioteca riceve una copia di ogni nuovo libro stampato in Svezia. Si è gradualmente ampliata per fornire servizi per la ricerca e per l'istruzione universitaria. È stata riorganizzata come biblioteca universitaria al momento della fondazione dell'Università di Umeå nel 1965. Un nuovo edificio principale della biblioteca nel campus universitario è stato inaugurato nel 1968. Da allora è stata ampliata, l'ultima volta nel 2006.
