Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, in Francia, a Vichy, salvò più di 2000 persone fra professori, letterati, ed artisti, dalla deportazione nazista, organizzandone la fuga verso gli Stati Uniti d'America tramite Spagna e Portogallo. Nel 1941 agevolò l'espatrio anche di Marc Chagall.
Nel 1941 venne espulso dalla Francia con l'accusa di collaborazionismo e difesa di criminali dediti all'anti-nazismo e tornò negli Stati Uniti d'America.
