Wist je dat de toenmalige Gentse burgemeester Emile Braun, die trouwens van Duitse afkomst was, onderhandelde met het oprukkende Duitse leger om Gent niet te bezetten. Het was 1914. Daar waren goede redenen voor want in de Belgische steden die ze al hadden veroverd waren er ernstige vernielingen aangericht. Daarvoor eisten de Duitsers wel wat. Oa. 100.000 sigaren, 1.000 flessen mineraalwater, een grote hoeveelheid sublimaatpastilles - een ontsmettingsmiddel dat dienst deed bij het hergebruik van condooms.
