Did you know that the then mayor of Ghent, Emile Braun, who was of German descent, negotiated with the advancing German army to not occupy Ghent? It was 1914. There were good reasons for this because in the Belgian cities they had already conquered, there had been serious destruction. The Germans demanded quite a lot for this. Among other things, 100,000 cigars, 1,000 bottles of mineral water, a large quantity of sublimat pastilles - a disinfectant used for the reuse of condoms.
