Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog bevond zich in de buurt van deze begraafplaats een schooltje. De Franse troepen gebruikten dit schooltje als medische post. Gesneuvelde soldaten werden begraven in de aanpalende tuin. Deze groeide uit tot een ware begraafplaats, maar heel wat graven werden tijdens de oorlog verwoest. De huidige Franse begraafplaats is de grootste op Belgische bodem. Zo’n 4.200 Franse soldaten liggen hier begraven, waarvan 616 in het massagraf. Hier vind je ook 69 islamitische grafstenen, bovenaan afgerond met een hoefijzerboog.
