Reeds bij het begin van de tweede wereldoorlog hebben de Duitse troepen Frankrijk razendsnel veroverd. De Britten hebben Frankrijk toen massaal verlaten om zich in Groot-Brittanië te hergroeperen.
Deze massale uittocht heette operatie Dynamo. Meer dan 300.000 soldaten konden vanuit Duinkerken ontsnappen met meer dan 1000 schepen.
De HMS Crested Eagle was een van de vele minder fortuinlijke schepen: het schip werd door een Duits vliegtuig (een Stuka) gebombardeerd en strandde op deze plek. Meer dan 300 soldaten kwamen daarbij in de vlammen om.
