Door zijn hoogte en aantrekkingskracht is de Dachstein sinds de 19e eeuw een begeerd doel voor bergbeklimmers geworden, nadat men lange tijd de Grimming als de hoogste berg van Stiermarken beschouwde. Beroemd zijn ook de ongeveer 1 km hoge roodoranje zuidwanden van Dachsteinkalk. De Dachstein is een berg van de Noordelijke Alpen en is daarmee, na de Parseierspitze in de Lechtaler Alpen, de op één na hoogste top. Terwijl de Lage Dachstein volledig in Opper-Oostenrijk ligt, loopt de grens van Opper-Oostenrijk naar Stiermarken over de Hoge Dachstein. 10 kilometer noordnoordoostelijk ligt Hallstatt, en ongeveer 6½ kilometer zuidoostelijk ligt het dorp Ramsau, aan de westrand het Lammertal.
