Het kasteel werd gebouwd door graaf Ernst Christoph Schallenberg als bestuurszetel voor zijn op Oostenrijkse goederen. Als zodanig heeft Puchenau nooit een verdedigende functie vervuld. De bouwer raakte financieel ten onder door de bouw van het kasteel, en dus moest hij het kasteel en de bijbehorende hoeve in 1693 verkopen aan baron Augustin von Ehrhard. Hij kon in 1695 de verheffing van Puchenau tot een adellijke landgoed bewerkstelligen. Via zijn dochter Maria Theresia kwam Puchenau samen met de heersten Gallspach in 1704 aan graaf Ehrgott von Khueffstein. Aangezien zijn huwelijk kinderloos was, kwam Puchenau in handen van de broers en zussen Lobgott en Maria Franziska von Khueffstein, gehuwde Thürheim. De adellijke landbezitters organiseerden in 1713 een veer over de Donau en een veerboot naar Linz. Al eerder had Christoph Ernst von Schallenberg een veerman in zijn dienst. Van Maria Franziska ging het bezit over naar de familie Thürheim.
