Alhoewel de bomen op het Kouterplein vrij natuurlijk aandoen is het een staaltje van kunnen van de Gentse Groendienst om deze hier te laten overleven. De onderaardse parking zit vlak onder het oppervlak waardoor de bomen geen diepe bodem hebben om te wortelen. Daarom koos men ook een boomsoort met een oppervlakkig wortelstelsel, en werden de wortels verankerd met kettingen net onder het oppervlak, zodat ze niet bij de eerste storm zullen omwaaien.
