Koning Albert I en koningin Elizabeth kwamen twee dagen na de wapenstilstand van 11 november te paard de Kouter opgereden om er de troepen te inspecteren. Dat men precies de Kouter hiervoor had uitgekozen, was geen toeval. Al sedert de Middeleeuwen sprak men van de Peerdecouter. Paarden en wapens werden er geschouwd en tijdens de 14de en 15de eeuw durfde men er al eens een tornooitje plegen, terwijl de schuttersgilden van Sint-Joris en Sint-Sebastiaan er feesten hielden.
Tijdens de 19de eeuw spreekt men over de Wapenplaats of Place dArmes.
