King Albert I and Queen Elizabeth rode on horseback into the Kouter two days after the armistice of November 11 to inspect the troops. The choice of the Kouter for this was no coincidence. Since the Middle Ages, it had been referred to as the ‘Peerdecouter’. Horses and weapons were reviewed there, and during the 14th and 15th centuries, it was not uncommon to hold a small tournament, while the shooting guilds of Saint George and Saint Sebastian held festivities there.
During the 19th century, it was referred to as the Weapons Place or ‘Place d’Armes’.
