In het hart van de Borinage vind je één van de mooiste staaltjes industriële archeologie in België: Le Grand-Hornu. Deze site werd tussen 1816 en 1835 opgericht door de Franse industrieel Henri de Gorge. Die had in 1810 een concessie gekocht om steenkool te ontginnen in Hornu.
Het neoclassicistische complex bestaat uit een 400-tal woningen, werkplaatsen en administratieve gebouwen. Vooral de werkplaatsen die rondom een groot centraal binnenplein gelegen zijn, vormen een indrukwekkend geheel.
In een deel van de gebouwen is sinds 2002 het MAC's gevestigd: le Musée des Arts Contemporains.
