Im Herzen der Borinage findest du eines der schönsten Beispiele industrieller Archäologie in Belgien: Le Grand-Hornu. Diese Stätte wurde zwischen 1816 und 1835 vom französischen Industriellen Henri de Gorge gegründet. Er hatte 1810 eine Konzession gekauft, um Kohlengruben in Hornu zu erschließen.
Das neoklassizistische Ensemble besteht aus etwa 400 Wohnungen, Werkstätten und Verwaltungsgebäuden. Besonders die Werkstätten, die sich um einen großen zentralen Innenhof gruppieren, bilden ein beeindruckendes Gesamtbild.
In einem Teil der Gebäude ist seit 2002 das MAC's untergebracht: das Musée des Arts Contemporains.
