De Koninklijke Muntschouwburg staat op de plaats waar vroeger een muntslagerij stond. Vandaar de naam "De Munte".
Het is hier dat de de opera "De Stomme van Portici" van Auber werd opgevoerd, wat het vuur aan de Belgisch revolutionaire lont stak en de onafhankelijkheid van Nederland inleidde. De opera-uitvoering werd notabene gegeven ter viering van de 59e verjaardag van koning Willem I.
In 1700 kwam hier een eerste schouwburg, maar die werd, na verval herbouwd in 1819 door de Franse Architect Louis Damesme.
