Hier lag ooit het oude dorpje Elsene, één van de 19 Brusselse gemeenten. De Maalbeek die iets hogerop rond de Terkamerenabdij ontspringt vormde hier natuurlijke vijvers waarin de monniken vis kweekten. Twee van die vijvers zijn nog zichtbaar, de derde is gedempt en omgevormd tot dit plein. De Maalbeek zelf is ook onder de grond gestopt. Het prachtige gebouw van het Nationaal Instituut voor de Radio-Omroep dat uitzendingen verzorgde van 1930 tot 1960 is een geklasseerd Art-Deco gebouw van architect Diongre en heeft als bijnaam ‘de Pakketboot’.
