In de jaren 70 van de 20ste eeuw werden over een breedte van tientallen meters en over een lengte van een halve kilometer alle huizen en fabrieken afgebroken om de metro aan te leggen. Hiervan herstelde Molenbeek slechts langzaam en bleef deze gleuf tientallen jaren een open wonde. Het is pas in het begin van deze eeuw dat de afbraak volledig werd uitgegomd met mooie parkjes, appartementen en overheidsgebouwen.
