De menhir (uit het Bretoense "men"= steen en "hir"= lang) is een monoliet, minder breed dan hoog, vertikaal opgericht en in de grond gezet. Werd hij geplaatst als markeerder van een grafplaats, als onderdeel van een zonnecultus of als opvallende grenspaal ? Vele hypothesen zijn de revue reeds gepasseerd, maar geen enkele heeft hierover uitsluitsel kunnen geven.
