Een Spuikom bestaat uit bassins of polders die in verbinding staan met een zeehaven via een spuisluis die men vroeger bij hoogwater liet vollopen om ze vervolgens bij laagwater met grote kracht te ledigen. Zo kon overtollig slib uit de havens verwijderd worden, zelfs zonder de hulp van baggerschepen. Deze Spuikom werd echter nooit gebruikt om de aanslibbing van de haven van Oostende tegen te gaan. In 1912, bij de eerste proefspuitingen, bleken de opgewekte stromingen schade aan te richten aan de kademuren. Op het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd de spui-inrichting vernietigd en in 1926 werd beslist om deze niet meer te herstellen.
Nu is de Spuikom een bruisend watersportgebied en oesterkwekerij.
