De zeesluis aan de Schelde beschermt de binnenstad tegen overstromingen. Bij vloed stuwde de Schelde heel wat water naar de binnenstad. Dit gecombineerd met veel regenval veroorzaakte dikwijls overstromingen. Maar niet meer met deze sluis.
Hier begint dus de Zeeschelde stoormafwaarts van de sluis. Aan de oostkant van de sluis zie je dus de invloed van eb en vloed hebt. Aan de westkant niet.
