Tessenderlo is misschien afgeleid van de samentrekking van Taxandria (de Kempen in de Romeinse tijd) en het Latijnse locus of plaats.
Plaatselijk spreekt men van "Looi" en de inwoners van deze gemeente worden "Looienaars" genoemd.
In Tessenderlo kan men de Sint-Martinuskerk (14e-15e eeuw) met stenen doksaal, de Sint-Luciakerk, de dekenij op het marktplein, het Bosmuseum natuurgebied "Gerhagen" Zavelberg
en de zwarte markt bezoeken.
