Drongen is een knooppunt van belangrijke verkeersaders: de autosnelweg E40, de R4, de rijksweg 466, de ringvaart rond Gent en de spoorlijn 50A Brussel-Oostende. Deze spoorlijn werd reeds in 1832 aangelegd. Hier passeren dagelijks tientallen treinen voor personenvervoer. Ook het drukke goederenvervoer naar de haven van Zeebrugge vindt langs hier zijn weg. Op de beide middenste sporen wordt de commerciële snelheid op 200 km/u gebracht. Beide buitenste sporen worden voorbehouden voor het goederenvervoer en de stoptreinen. Door deze werken komen ongekende mogelijkheden voor het goederenvervoer. Als gevolg van deze werken werd eind 2010 het oude stationsgebouw gesloopt.
