In 1994 werd het 2de Regiment Gidsen, een Leopard - tankbataljon uit Altenrath in Duitsland, samen met veel andere eenheden ontbonden. Er stelde zich toen het probleem van het bewaren van het rijke patrimonium van dit roemrijk Cavalerieregiment dat werd opgericht in 1874. De gemeente Zelzate stelde zich kandidaat om dit patrimonium een thuis te geven. De gemeent was het regiment namelijk erkentelijk voor de grote offers die de eenheid had gebracht bij de verdediging van Zelzate tijdens de achtiendaagse veldtocht in de meidagen van 1940. Het museum brengt in drie museumzalen op gepaste wijze hulde aan het rijke verleden van het regiment.
