In het jaar 1544 was er een echte ketterjacht aan de gang. Vooral in Leuven was die sterk. Mercator verbleef op dit moment in Rupelmonde omdat hij de erfenis moest regelen betreffende zijn overleden grootoom Gijsbrecht de Cremer. Op verzoek van de procureur-generaal van de Raad van Brabant werd hij aangehouden op laste van ketterij en werd hij opgesloten in het oude kasteel van Rupelmonde.
