Damme is een stad in de Belgische provincie West-Vlaanderen. De stad is een toeristische trekpleister met veel oude gebouwen. Deelgemeenten inbegrepen telt Damme iets minder dan 11.000 inwoners, die Dammenaars worden genoemd.Damme werd gesticht in 1180 en toen voor het eerst ook schriftelijk vermeld als Hendam. In 1217 werd dat Hondsdam. Vermoedelijk kwam het voorvoegsel af van Honte, een modderige zeearm. In de 14e eeuw ontwikkelde zich dan de legende dat er, alvorens de stad te kunnen stichten, eerst een duivelse hond moest worden verjaagd.
