Op de eerste maandag van maart is het jaarmarkt in Geraardsbergen. Daar wordt het einde van de winter gevierd met de krakelingenworp en de tonnekensbrand. Krakelingen zijn ringvormige broodjes. Eén van de krakelingen bevat een gouden sieraad. De broodjes worden in de menigte gegooid. Aan het eind van het feest wordt een houten ton in brand gestoken dat het begin van de lente symboliseert. Aan de autoriteiten werd ook wijn met levende visjes geschonken, maar dat gebruik was omstreden en werd verboden. Het gebruik van de tonnekensbrand is op de lijst van het UNESCO Werelderfgoed beland.
