West-Vlaanderen is de enige Belgische provincie die aan de kust gelegen is. Het westelijke en noordelijke deel van de provincie bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit de vlakke Polders, in het westen doorsneden door de rivier de IJzer, die in Nieuwpoort in de zee uitmondt. Het binnenland is minder vlak, en in het zuiden bevindt zich het West-Vlaams Heuvelland, met als hoogste top de Kemmelberg (156 m). Het zuidoosten van de provincie wordt doorsneden door de rivier de Leie, die verder naar Oost-Vlaanderen stroomt. In het uiterste zuidoosten wordt de provinciegrens door de Schelde gevormd.
