Het arrondissement Turnhout is een van de drie arrondissementen van de provincie Antwerpen. Het arrondissement heeft een oppervlakte van 1.356,86 km² en telde 461.867 inwoners op 1 januari 2019.Het arrondissement is vernoemd naar zijn belangrijkste stad. Het toponiem Turnhout bestaat uit twee woorddelen namelijk Turn- en hout. Turn- zou mogelijks afgeleid zijn van het Germaanse woord durnum, dat doorn betekent. Het achtervoegsel -hout komt van het Germaanse woord hulta en betekent bos. Het toponiem kan dan ook verklaard worden als doornbos.
