Marche-en-Famenne, doorgaans afgekort tot Marche, en zo ook op de richtingaanduidingen. Marche ligt aan de westrand van de overgangszone tussen de Famenne en de bossen van de Ardennen. Marche is in de eerste plaats een marktplaats, het administratieve en gerechtelijke centrum, de arrondissementshoofdstad. Het is een aangenaam winkelstadje, waar een gezellige drukte heerst, waar het centrum met smaak gerestaureerd werd en waar flink wat aandacht wordt besteed aan cultureel toerisme.
In Marche werd in 1577 het Eeuwig Edict met de 17_Provinciën gesloten, waarbij de Pacificatie van Gent (1576) werd bekrachtigd en waarmee een officieel punt werd gezet achter de Spaanse overheersing. Marche werd daarna opgenomen bij de reeks steden van het Gulden Vlies.
