Voor de O.L.V. Kerk van Dendermonde staat het standbeeld van Pater Pieter Jan De Smet of Petrus Joannes De Smet. Pater De Smet ging eerst studeren naar de US. Hij kwam terug naar België maar leerde weer naar Missouri in 1837en begon hij zijn missiewerk bij de Indianen. Hij kwam regelmatig terug naar Europa om geld te verzamelen voor zijn roodhuiden. De Amerikaanse regering erkende zijn grote invloed op de Indianen en belastte hem met verscheidene vredesopdrachten. Pater De Smet overleed te St. Louis in de nacht van 22 op 23 mei 1873.
