Met de komst van de expresweg N49 werd het Aalstgoed doormidden gesneden. De kruising van het Aalstgoed met de expresweg werd geblokeerd met betonblokken, zodat alleen fietsers hier konden oversteken.
Algauw werden deze zware blokken aan de kant geschoven en werd de kruising van het Aalstgoed een uiterst gevaarlijke oversteekplaats.
In de jaren '90 werd uiteindelijk begonnen aan de fietsbrug als definitieve oversteekplaats. Deze brug wordt versierd door wuivende figuren, de 'peten'.
