Hamont-Achel is één van de belangrijkste Teutengemeenten van Noord-Limburg. Het is in Limburg de enige gemeente waar Teuten (rondreizende handelaars) en trappisten elkaar ontmoetten. Heel wat erfgoed herinnert nog aan de Teuten. Achel herbergt hiernaast het enige trappistenklooster in de provincie.
