Het is twintig jaar geleden dat vzw De Mark boven de doopvont werd gehouden. Eind jaren tachtig was milieu een thema dat veel minder aandacht kreeg dan nu. Zo hadden gemeenten nog geen milieuambtenaar en van verschillende soorten vuilniszakken was nog geen sprake. In Galmaarden zelf was de rivier de Mark er in die periode heel slecht aan toe. Zes inwoners groepeerden zich om daar verandering in te brengen.
Sindsdien heeft de vzw, mede dankzij de steun van vele vrijwilligers, al heel wat kunnen verwezenlijken in de Markvallei. 'Er zijn nu drie natuurreservaten, goed voor 75 hectare, die we samen met Natuurpunt hebben verworven.
